Share

Twenty-seven candidates are running to replace termed-out Gov. Jerry Brown. The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board interviewed seven: Huntington Beach Assemblyman Travis Allen and Rancho Santa Fe businessman John Cox, both Republicans, and Treasurer John Chiang, former state Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin, former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, former state Attorney General’s Office official Amanda Renteria and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, five Democrats.

The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board interviewed the seven candidates for about an hour each. Here are those interviews, lightly edited. The two top vote-getters in the June 5 primary will advance to a runoff election in November.
